Found: Mali, Senegal, Mauritania, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Niger

The Black crowned crane is a tall, long-legged and long-necked bird with a large golden ‘crown’. Found in wetter habitats like swamps and flooded grasslands, it builds its nests on the ground and can sometimes be seen stomping the earth to disturb invertebrate prey. The species is classified as ‘Vulnerable’, and is threatened by hunting, captive trade for domestication, as well as habitat loss and degradation due to development, agriculture, and climate change.
